When your boss asks you to stay late, are you quick to reply? There are multiple reasons why we give a quick 'yes' or 'no'. For the quick 'no', there is usually a legitimate reason such as, a doctor's appointment, a previous engagement (happy hour does not count), or a function for your children or spouse. For the quick 'yes', we must be prepared to defend our decision if necessary to others. You might need to extend your child care hours, did you speak with the provider first? Your spouse may have something spontaneous planned that you were not aware of, should you have checked in before you answered yes? The reason we have said yes must be of a productive nature, not for greed or repayment of a favor. The bottom line is that when we agree to work overtime, we should not expect the benefits of that additional work to be immediately recognized by the people we consider important in our lives. Overworking can lead to a multitude of problems in a marriage, family, and even with the quality of our work. In Exodus 34:21 it is written, "Six days you shall labor, but even on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest". In order to be prosperous, it is essential that we take breaks. The planned "off-time" from work is necessary!
Are you working too much? Have you been considerate of your family when agreeing to overtime? Money isn't everything, you can't buy more time!!!
