Firstfruits

For many people across the nation, today is payday! It is the first day of the month and a Friday; many people are counting their monies and making plans. We check our accounts to make sure the money is there and then we prepare for withdrawals.  For some of you, everything is gone within a few days.  Many people have mortgages and car payments that are paid out with the first check of the month.  I wonder; how many people are keeping God in mind for their first paycheck? There are many references of giving firstfruits in the Old Testament.  These things include: corn, wine, oil, honey, frankincense, wheat, and various livestock. Oil and wine are mentioned multiple times! In biblical times, oil and wine were precious items.  These expensive items were considered acceptable sacrifices to the high priest and to God.

What would that look like for us today?  If you were asked to give of the most valuable of items that you have received for the month, what would they be?  As you are pulling out your cash or debit cards for one of your large shopping trips to Wal-Mart, Sam's, or Costco, would you buy something for your church food pantry or local food bank? What about setting aside and donating some old clothes that are taking space in your closet after you hang up that new shirt you just bought? What if you skipped happy hour this week and paid for some people to enjoy a hot meal at a soup kitchen?

I know, you're probably feeling a tug of guilt mixed in with a bit of hoarding.  I deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Why should I give up my entertainment to help people?  The answer is simple...

GOD TOLD YOU TO!!!!  When you do something for others, the blessings will pour out to your family.  Don't believe me?  Try it this week and see what happens!
